Introduction
Practical 3 covered the operational layer — selecting participants, arranging logistics, running the day. Practical 4 goes one level deeper, into the instructional design layer: given a set of topics and a group of learners, how do you actually architect the schedule so that learning builds logically, session by session, rather than being a random stack of lectures?
This is deliberately narrow in scope: it is about the architecture and sequencing of a programme — not writing the objectives themselves (Practical 5, using Bloom's Taxonomy) and not the fine detail of each teaching method (Practical 10). Think of it as designing the skeleton the later practicals will put flesh on.

Two programmes can share identical content and identical resource persons, yet one produces far better learning purely because of how sessions are sequenced and paced. Design is the layer that is easiest to skip and most responsible for whether content "sticks."
Where "Design" Sits: The ADDIE Framework
ADDIE is the standard instructional-design model — useful here mainly to show students how this practical connects to the ones before and after it.

Principles of Content Sequencing
Before slotting topics into a schedule, decide the logic that will order them. Common sequencing principles used in extension training design:
Simple → Complex
Start with basic concepts before advanced application. E.g., "what is IPM" before "designing an IPM calendar."
Known → Unknown
Anchor new content in what learners already do. E.g., start from farmers' current pest-control practice before introducing new methods.
Whole → Part → Whole
Give the big picture first, break into components, then reassemble. E.g., show the full IPM cycle, teach each component, then re-walk the full cycle.
Chronological / Process Order
Follow the natural sequence of the task itself. E.g., nursery raising → transplanting → field management → harvest, in that order.
Sequencing a Single Session: Gagn├й's Nine Events of Instruction
Robert Gagn├й's (1985) model is the most widely used framework for sequencing within one session — apply it to any training block regardless of subject.

Designing the Programme Schedule
Once sequencing logic is decided, it needs to be laid out across the available days. Three design considerations dominate:
Session Length & Pacing
45–60 minutes before a method change; adult attention drops sharply beyond this without a break in format.
Primacy–Recency Placement
Learners retain the start and end of a day best — place the most critical content there, and lighter/recap content mid-afternoon.
Method Variety
Alternate passive (lecture) and active (discussion, demonstration, practice) formats across the day, not just within one session.
Progressive Difficulty Across Days
In multi-day programmes, day 1 builds foundation, later days build application — mirroring simple→complex at the macro scale.

Matching Instructional Activities to the Type of Learning
Full method-by-method treatment is reserved for Practical 10; here, only the design-level decision of which category of activity fits which learning domain.

⚠️ Common Design Flaw
Using only lecture for a skill-based objective — e.g., trying to teach "correct pesticide spraying technique" (psychomotor) through slides alone. If the objective is a skill, the design must include hands-on practice, not just information transfer.

MANAGE (Hyderabad) training-of-trainers programmes explicitly train extension staff in this design logic before they design their own farmer-facing schedules.
Beyond Agriculture — Same Design Logic

A corporate onboarding programme and a nursing skills workshop both use the same foundation-then-application sequencing and Gagn├й-style session structuring as an agricultural extension training. The specific content changes; the design logic — attention, objective, recall, content, practice, feedback — does not.

Context: 40 farmers identified through Practical 1's needs assessment want to shift toward natural farming but lack both conceptual understanding and hands-on skill.

They overlap but answer different questions. Planning/organizing (Practical 3) asks "who attends, where, when, with what logistics." Design asks "in what order and structure will the content be delivered so learning builds properly." A programme can be perfectly organized logistically and still poorly designed if sessions are sequenced randomly.
No fixed rule, but 45–60 minutes before a method or pace change is a commonly used guideline for adult audiences — beyond this, attention drops noticeably in lecture-format sessions specifically. Hands-on or field sessions can run longer since the activity itself sustains engagement.
Not rigidly — short sessions may compress several events together (e.g., gaining attention and stating the objective in one move), but skipping recall of prior learning or feedback entirely tends to weaken retention. Treat the nine events as a checklist to test a session design against, not a mandatory script.
This follows the primacy-recency effect in memory research — information presented first or last in a sequence tends to be recalled better than information in the middle. It's a design heuristic, not an absolute rule, but it's a useful default when deciding where to place the most critical content in a day's schedule.
Affective-domain content is usually sequenced through story/experience before analysis — a peer testimonial or case example first, to build emotional relevance, followed by discussion and evidence, rather than opening with statistics. Sequencing still applies; it's the type of opening activity that changes with the domain.
