Introduction
Practical 4 left one deliberate gap — every session plan had an "Objective" row marked as a placeholder. This practical fills that gap. A learning objective is the single sentence that tells you, in advance, exactly what a learner should be able to do after the session — and, just as importantly, how you will know whether they can actually do it.
Two tools do the work here: Bloom's Taxonomy, which classifies the level and type of learning being aimed at, and the SMART framework, which tests whether an objective is written precisely enough to actually guide teaching and evaluation.

Everything downstream depends on this one sentence: the choice of instructional activity (Practical 4), the design of the evaluation tool (Practical 9), and even how the Logframe's Output row (Practical 2) gets phrased. A vague objective makes all three impossible to do well.
Why "Understand" and "Know" Don't Work as Objectives
Words like understand, know, appreciate, be aware of, learn about describe an internal mental state that cannot be directly observed or measured. If an objective can't be observed, it can't be evaluated — you have no way of testing whether it was achieved.

⚠️ Common Error
Writing the topic of a session ("Soil Health Management") and mistaking it for the objective. A topic names the subject; an objective names the observable change in the learner. Every objective should complete the sentence "After this session, the learner will be able to ___."
Bloom's Taxonomy: The Cognitive Domain
Benjamin Bloom's (1956) taxonomy, later revised by Anderson & Krathwohl (2001), orders cognitive learning from simple recall to complex creation. This directly extends the sequencing logic from Practical 4 (simple → complex) down to the level of a single objective.

⚠️ Note on "Understand" in Bloom's Model vs. as an Objective Verb
Bloom's second level is labelled Understand, but the taxonomy itself uses observable sub-verbs (explain, summarise, classify) at that level — never the bare word "understand" as the objective verb. The taxonomy names the cognitive level; the objective still needs a measurable action verb.

Bloom's original work covered the cognitive domain; two companion domains complete the picture and connect directly to Practical 4's domain-matching table.

The SMART Test for a Well-Written Objective
Specific
States exactly what the learner will do — no ambiguity about the action.
Measurable
Includes a way to check achievement — a number, a standard, an observable action.
Achievable
Realistic within the session's time and the learners' starting level.
Relevant
Connects directly to the programme's Output/Purpose (Practical 2's Logframe).
Time-bound
States by when — usually "by the end of this session/programme."

A nursing skills course objective ("demonstrate correct IV cannulation technique") and a school objective ("solve two-step linear equations") are built with the exact same Bloom's-level + SMART logic as an extension training objective. This is a general instructional-design competency, not an agriculture-specific one.
Mini Exercise: Fixing a Weak Objective Set
Context: A draft training plan for the natural farming programme (from Practical 4) originally listed these three objectives. Each needed correction before the schedule could be finalised.

Yes, commonly — a session might start at Remember/Understand and build to Apply by the end. What matters is that each individual objective is written at one clear, specific level, not blended into a vague statement covering several levels at once.
Not as written, because it can't be directly observed. If the underlying goal is a genuine affective outcome, translate it into an observable proxy — e.g., "state one reason they value X" or "choose to participate in Y when given the option" — rather than using "appreciate" itself.
No fixed rule, but 2–4 well-written, specific objectives per session is a common practical range — more than that usually signals the session is trying to cover too much content for its time, which conflicts with the "Achievable" criterion in SMART.
The original 1956 taxonomy was revised by Anderson & Krathwohl (2001), mainly renaming levels into verb form (e.g., "Comprehension" → "Understand") and reordering the top two levels (placing Create above Evaluate). The revised version is what's taught here and remains the standard reference in instructional design and education globally.
Not necessarily a number — "measurable" just means an observer could agree on whether it happened. "Demonstrate correct sprayer calibration" is measurable without a number because a trainer can directly observe correct vs. incorrect technique. Numeric targets (e.g., "identify 3 of 4 pests") are useful when precision matters for evaluation, not a strict requirement for every objective.
